La Palma Chess Club Norm Point Scoring

1. Uses of Norm point scoring:  Norm point scoring may be used for any tournament games, LPCC "scrounger" games (detailed here), or for the LPCC's Beat Your Norm Grand Prix.  Norm points may be used separately and concurrently with normal tournament scoring.

2. The Norm point scoring schedule for games between two rated players:  Norm points for games played at the LPCC are based on the following table.  For example, if a two players are peers (within 35 points in rating), the winner gets +0.5 Norm points for a win and the loser gets -0.5 Norm points.  If a player achieves an upset of 301 or more rating points, he would be awarded +0.9 Norm points; the higher rated player that suffered the upset loss would lose 0.9 Norm points, i.e., 0.9 Norms points would be deducted from their cumulative Norm point score. The Norm points awarded is calculated as standard 1.0 (win), 0 (loss), or 1/2 (draw) minus the player's win expectation using the USCF's formula that reflects rating differences.

3. The Norm point scoring schedule for games when one or both players are unrated:  When one or both players are unrated, Norm points are awarded as follows: the winner gets +0.1 Norm point and the loser gets -0.1 Norm point.  For drawn games a Norm point score is zero for both players.

4. Unplayed games, half point byes, or full point byes:  These games count for nothing toward Norm points.  The only exception is if a player is the odd man out when pairings are made and the TD gives them a full point bye, then the player still gets a participation credit as described below.

5. Participation credit:  Players get +0.05 Norm points for every game played.  For example, someone that plays all games in a 6-round Swiss would accumulate +0.3 Norm points over the course of the event for participation (0.3 = 6 * 0.05).  There are two special cases when this credit is given even though no game is played.  Both apply when a player was present, ready, willing, and able to play but by no fault on their part they did not get a game.  The first case is when a players get a full point bye for being the odd man out when pairings are made.  The second case is when a player is stood-up and wins by forfeit.  The participation credit applies to the Beat Your Norm Grand Prix only, not for LPCC scrounger events.

6. Forfeit wins and no shows:
A player that doesn't show and doesn't notify the TD before 5:45 PM that Friday loses 1.0 Norm point.  His opponent that was stood-up will be re-paired against another player if possible. If it's not possible to re-pair the stood-up player, he is awarded 0.1 Norm point (0.05 for being stood up plus 0.05 participation credit for being ready to play).  If the stood-up player is re-paired against another player, he forgoes the 0.05 Norm point for being stood up but will still get the participation credit for the game he does play.

7. Ratings to use:  The most current published USCF rating supplement at the time that leg of the Norm competition begins.
