The La Palma Chess Club schedule
Winter 2010 (December 4 through March 26)

Entry Fee & Registration

The entry fee for the 3-round December tournament is $25.  Then a $35 entry fee entitles you to play in a 3-month tournament session or $25 for one 6-round Swiss. $5 discount for La Palma residents.

Registration for each event: 6-7pm. Rounds start at 7pm.

The Knight Before Christmas

Sponsored by Harold Cardinal Valery, M.D., Inc.

A 3-round Swiss in two sections: Anthony Santasiere Section – Over 1600; Rudolf Spielmann Section – Under 1600

Entry fee: $25 (This tournament is separate from the events in 2010). $5 discount for La Palma residents.

• 1st U2000, $50; 1st U1900, $50; 1st U1800, $50; 1st U1700, $50

Rudolf Section

• 1st U1500, $50; 1st U1400, $50; 1st U1300, $50; 1st U1200, $50

• Silent Knight (Shortest won game with fewest knight moves by winner) - $5

• Frosty the Low Man (Lowest score) - $5

• Christmas Present (Receiver of the biggest blunder) -$5

• Yuletide Carols (Anyone with the name of Carol or Yuletide) - $10

• Pawnica (Best score by a Jewish player) - $5

• Jolly Old St. Nick (Anybody with the name of Nick over age 60) - $5

• We Three Kings (awarded to anyone with all 3 games as Kings Gambits and/or Kings Indians) -$5

• Do You Hear What I Hear? (Longest announced mate) - $5

• Dasher (most trips to the bathroom during the 1st round) - $5

• Dancer (Best Moon Walk by a “C” player prior to 2nd round) - $5

• Prancer (The most convincing John Wayne walk around the room prior to the third round by a master) - $5

• Vixen (Best score by a female) - $15

• Comet (Best performance rating gain) - $10

• Cupid (anybody introducing two entrants who get married before the third round) - $5

• Donner (Anybody wearing a Christmas hat while mating an opponent rated over 200 points higher) - $5

• Blitzen (Shortest Game in terms of winning player’s clock time) - $5

• Loose Piece Navidad (Ruy Lopez game with the most captures of unprotected pieces) - $5

• White Christmas (Shortest Mate with White) - $10

• Best Elf (Best score between Brian Scanlon, Mike Henebry, Leigh Hunt, Mike Brady, Chris Roberts & Yoshio Dupree) - $5

(ties share prize)

Byes:  None

TGIF Team Tournament

A 6-round Swiss in one section. Entrants will be divided into four teams by ratings before the first round at 7pm. Subsequent entrants will be added to best keep the team ratings closest to equal. Normal Swiss pairing, except that team members will not play against each other.

Team Prizes

Winning team members put names into hat for a raffle to be held the week after the tournament ends (1st round of next tournament). Drawing for: (1) A digital chess clock, (2) a double-weighted wooden chess set, and (3) A tournament chess bag.

Byes: One  half-point bye may be taken.  An irrevocable last round half-point bye is allowed only if declared before the first round starts.


Grandmaster Fest

A 6-round Open Swiss (Free entry to all GMs and former World Champions)

Prizes:
 

1st Place, $50

2nd Place, $35

3rd Place, $25

Trophies: Best U1950, U1750, U1550, U1350, and U1150

Time controls: Game/120
