The La Palma Chess Club schedule
Fall 2010 (September 10 through December 31)

Entry Fee

One $50 entry fee entitles you to play in the 14-week tournament session (not the simul and Pilgrim events). Alternatively, the entry fees are as follows: Club Championships - $35 , Halloween Team - $25, Mod Quad - $20. There is a $5 discount for La Palma residents or players under 18.

Tournament Details
 

GM Varuzhan Akobian Simul

Simultaneous exhibition and lecture by one of the world's strongest chess players, the 2700+ rated Grandmaster Varuzhan Akobian. Mr. Akobian was the winner of the 2009 National Open and the 2009 North American Open.  He was a World Cup qualifier, and two-time World Open Champion. Fee $25 a board.

2010 Club Championship

A 6-round Swiss in one section. 

Prizes:
$$100 first place and 2010 Club Champion title.
$$50 2nd place.
Class Prizes: trophies to best U1700, U1500, and U1300/Unrated
Best game prize as judged by IM Jack Peters, $50.

Time controls: Game/120.

Byes: Two half-point byes may be taken.  An irrevocable last round half-point bye is allowed only if declared before the first round starts.


The Halloween Team Event

A 3-round Swiss. Entrants will be divided into four teams by ratings before the first round at 7pm. Subsequent entrants will be added to best keep the team ratings closest to equal. Normal Swiss pairing, except that team members will not play against each other.

Registration:
6-7pm. Rounds start 7pm.

Individual Prizes (one winner per prize, prizes will be decided by tie-breaks. i.e. no ties):

Team Prizes
Winning team members put names into hat for a raffle to be held December 3rd (2 weeks after the tournament ends, i.e., first round of next rated tournament). Drawing for: (1) A digital chess clock, (2) a double-weighted wooden chess set, and (3) A tournament chess bag.

Blitzing the Pilgrim

Because a lot of the members will participate in the American Open and because of the Thanksgiving weekend, we will have an informal unrated speed chess tournament. No EF no prizes, just glory. Rounds determined that night.

 

Registration: 6-7pm. Rounds start 7pm.

: G/5, not rated

 

The Mod Quad

A 3-round Quad in several sections. Each plays all others in their section once.

Registration: 6-7pm. Rounds start 7pm.

Prizes: 1st place in each quad, $50.
